• Jonah Hill (Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is in negotiations for DreamWorks' and Paramount's Transformers 2. He will co-star opposite Shia Pet's Sam Witwicky as the "plucky comic relief." (And Galaxy Quest fans out there?_ My Take: I haven't seen either of Hill's movies, and I'm not blasting the idea, but Shia Pet can hold his own. Of course, he also excels in playing off others, so this could really rock! (Oh the temptation to say, "There is more to this move than meets the eye...")

• Return to Witch Mountain announces new cast members. Tom Everett Scott, Chris Marquette, Billy Brown and Cheech Marin have joined the production as well as the original child stars from the 70's version, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann. My Take: Again, this one's got The Rock in it, and he'll have to interact with kids. I think it's going to be hilarious!
• Lego Launches Raiders of the Lost Brick animated cartoon. I've heard that Shia Pet is going to host the red carpet premier of the event...
• Speed Racer will release a 20 minute "mockumentary" about the fictional Racer family--available at Target stores prior to the movie's opening. The mockumentary will be lengthened for the DVD. My Take: The last mockumentary I saw was Spinal Tap. I'm anxious to see what this one will look like.

The Final Cut in Movies Box Office Report: 04/28/08

This Weekend's Science Fiction & Fantasy Box Office Report:

The box office, again, had a poor showing with the number one movie, Baby Mama, taking in $18.271 million dollars. (I suspect most movie goers are saving their hard earned $$$ for Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull--in that order.)

• #3, $11.23 million: The Forbidden Kingdom. The Forbidden Kingdom made 30% this week of what it made last week--avoiding the 2nd week drop off that most movies have experienced this spring. Grossing over $38 million, it has now beaten Prom Night, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Street Kings, and Leather Heads. I'm expecting a pretty steep drop this weekend, however, with Iron Man coming out.
• #5, $4.525 million: Nim's Island. Nim's Island is still in almost 3,000 theaters, so it should stay in the top 12 next weekend.
• #8, $2.41 million: Horton Hears a Who. Horton has grossed over $147 million domestically...

Who wants to bet that Iron Man will be number 1 next week?

Science Fiction & Fantasy Movies Opening This Weekend (04/25/08)

Here are this weekend's new science Fiction & Fantasy movie releases:

• Nothing but limited stuff that I'm not interested in is opening this weekend in theaters. Go get a DVD of Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem or Cloverfield.
• Better yet, start watching The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade to prepare for May. (There will be a test.)

• Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman are set to write a "contemporary re-imagining" (read: remake) of Brian De Palma's 1978 supernatural horror film, The Fury, which originally starred Kirk Douglas and John Cassavetes. My Take: Is Hollywood ever going to take a risk and just come up with something totally original instead of remaking old stuff or ruining a good book?
• Guillermo del Toro is officially the director of The Hobbit! He's moving to New Zealand for four years to work with Peter Jackson, WETA, and Wingnut, and they're going to do a sequel to The Hobbit that takes place during the 60 year time span between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring! We're looking at a 2011 and 2012 release of the films. My Take: Do I have to tell you how excited I am about this? My heart is still beating rapidly!
• Speaking of Guillermo del Toro, now that he has 4 years of his time taken up, he has said that he would consider doing a Hellboy III if Hellboy II: The Golden Army does well in the theaters, but no more after that. My Take: Hellboy? Who's Hellboy? Hey! Guess what! Guillermo del Toro is going to direct The Hobbit!

• Moon Bloodgood is in final negotiations to star as the female lead in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. My Take: I think I like T4 as a title better than this lengthy one.
• The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Chronicles of Narnia) will begin shooting in October. They will be shooting in the same water tank in Mexico used in Titanic and Master and Commander. Dawn Treader is scheduled for release on May 7, 2010. My Take: I'm sure the actors are happy that they finally get to travel to someplace warm.
• Guillermo Del Toro has hinted that we should know in 4-5 days whether he'll be the director of The Hobbit. My Take: How about 3 days? Or 2?
