09/11/08 Final Cut In Movies Science Fiction & Fantasy Movie News

Here's the latest in Science Fiction & Fantasy movie news. Click on the links to read the full articles:

• Denzel Washington will star in and co-produce The Book of Eli, a post-apocalyptic drama directed by Hughes Brothers, Albert and Allen. My Take: Is it just me, or do there seem to be a lot of post-apocalyptic dramas out there? Remember Hollywood, I Am Legend did well because it was a good story and because Will Smith rocks! Don't go all copy-cat on me.
• Ghostbusters is coming back--with the ORIGINAL CAST! At least, that is the plan according to Sony. They don't intend to make deals with the original cast until they have a script. According to Harold Ramis (Egon) the old Ghostbusters would appear in a mentor capacity for new ones. My Take: Move over everyone. We've got a new future blockbuster in the house--as long as they don't use a horrible storyline like they did in Ghostbusters 2. Finally, a movie that doesn't involve interpersonal darkness and violence.
• Spiderman 4 & 5 are in the works! Sam Rami and Tobey McGuire have reported signed on, BUT the studio will not recast Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson. They are still trying to figure out who the villain might be, and they want to shoot 4 and 5 at the same time. My Take: This is going to sound horrible, but I've still got to watch Spiderman 3. It debuted the same night as my first book signing for A Prophecy Forgotten, and all my time went away after that.
• Warner Brothers will re-release The Dark Knight in January, just in time for Oscar voting season. They are negotiating with IMAX, but have said nothing about conventional theaters. My Take: BEAT TITANIC!

• #12, $1.79 million, Mirrors.

09/04/08 Final Cut In Movies Science Fiction & Fantasy Movie News

Here's the latest in Science Fiction & Fantasy movie news. Click on the links to read the full articles:

• The Dark Knight passes $900 million worldwide and $500 million domestically. It also has already passed Spiderman as the highest grossing comic book movie of all time. My Take: It would really be nice if we could get a science fiction or fantasy movie to pass The Titanic in worldwide sales.
• Vadim Perelman will direct Poltergeist. My Take: I gotta be honest. I don't have a good feeling about this. I think Hollywood needs to revisit the old adage about messing with a good thing.
• Tim Roth will star in Skellig, a story about a boy who finds a part owl/part angel creature living in his garage in Northern England.
• 20th Century Fox is suing Warner Brothers over the right to make Watchmen into a film. The trial date is set for January 6th. Warner Brothers still insists that the movie will debut on March 6th. My Take: Just reading the summary of the law suit is confusing. Besides, I have no compassion for Fox. They owned the rights to the first graphic novel to hit the New York Times Best Seller list. If they chose to sit on it for too long, that's their problem. At least Warner Brothers decided to do something about it.
• Aaron Eckhart has confirmed that Harvey Dent is in fact dead and will not be reappearing in the next Batman installment. My Take: I think that's a good thing. The Two-Face character drove me crazy because he was more unpredictable than the Joker.
